I went to my first hash this weekend with the Pgh Hash House Harriers. I figured since it was Tommy's hosted hash, this would be a good one to start with, plus I brought Judith along so I wouldn't be the only new boot on the hash. It really wasn't what I was expecting. After hearing Tommy explain what usually goes on and reading the website, I was expecting things more along the lines of hard core runners and beer drinkers sprinting along stopping briefly to down a beer and continue on running. As in, not entirely something I would be in to. Everyone was so friendly and it turned out to involve several miles of walking in the woods and along train tracks and in general experiencing a bizarre fascinating fun sub-culture you just can't really explain adequately to people. It's just something you have to experience for yourself. I ended up drinking a lot and meeting a bunch of great new people. I spent most of today recovering. Serendipity intercepted today and I ended helping out one of these new friends, who almost was stranded in pgh for complicated reasons, but she is well on her way back to Buffalo and hopefully not going insane and is safe with her ride.
