Pagan Prom
As a favor, I volunteered to dj the POI pagan prom. I spent the past couple of weeks listening to and downloading heaps of music, looking for prom appropriate songs to play. It was like making a six hour long mix tape for someone.
I kept the standards, instrumentals and jazz to the dinner music portion of the evening, I slipped in a few witchy songs, sweet romantic cheesy songs, a dash of ironic fun and heaping helpings of regular entertaining selections to get folks on the dance floor. It was a unique event and so I thought it appropriate to have an eclectic selection on hand.
Weeks before, I had asked for a list of expected music/artists so I could prepare ahead of time and download these requests to my library of music. We have a subscription to Napster, I could gather up any related music as long as it was down-loadable from the site. There were a few that didn't make it into the library, mostly because they were bands I hadn't heard of and were not included on the list of expected music or just on a matter of principle.
When you have a dj at an event, you have to expect to be subjected to that person's bias in music interest and listening philosophy. I like having my horizons broadened and take a great deal of enjoyment out of exposing others to something new. This includes music. I may have over thought the play list, which I put together mostly as a guide line, not necessarily to just be "THE DJ Z Mp3 Experience" (Get it, DJ Z, Deborah Jean Zieger, nudge, nudge, D J Z) but rather a frame work that could be modified as I read the desires of the small crowd.
The list did get severely mangled, my vision of highs and lows in the songs, interjected with music I love that I know most others don't listen to, was quickly shelved. As one participant informed me, 'the people that will dance, won't dance to anything they're not familiar with' So out came the tired old songs they could have paid someone else $300 for the night to play.
It was a fun thing to do, I would do it again. It would have been nice if there were more people interested in dancing though, maybe they just weren't drinking enough.
