I have three brothers. I grew up with sports all around me, every Sunday it was either football or auto racing that was on the television, the white noise of the crowds or the cars putting my father to sleep in the recliner. You wouldn't dare change the channel though, the instant you would think he was sound asleep and not really paying attention, that instant you think it's ok to find something else to watch, he would snap awake, "I am watching that!" I never particularly enjoyed football, I didn't fully understand it either. Then I met Mark and in the years since we've been together, I have watched many a game with him. At first, indifferently; just being in the room and spending time with him was what was important. Slowly, as my most basic questions were answered and my comprehension of the game grew, I started enjoying the game. Granted, I'm no super fan, I can not spout off statistics or trivia, I have a difficult time just recounting a play Mark missed while out of the room. It helps that the Steelers have done exceptionally well this year, even Mark's interest in the game wanes when his favorite teams do poorly and games go unwatched. The games have held my attention this season. You can see me sitting beside Mark cheering and groaning with the highs and lows of the game. I'll sit in anticipation,"Get'em!" and "I can't watch!" escape excitedly from my lips as critical plays unfold. I have to say it, I enjoy watching football and I'm looking forward to the AFC and NFC championship playoffs next week.
