I'm a company now
I'm just full of entries today.
I'm now considered a company in the eyes of the government, sole proprietor. Since one day of the week I'm technically not working at the museum with this forestry contract, since it is a contract with a government agency the Forest Service, I had to register with the central contractor registry. This registration was long and involved, it took several hours over multiple days to complete, with some steps days apart as I needed to wait for various confirmation codes.
I needed to define my work using their hundreds of predefined notions ranging from national security to dairy farmer. There was little I could characterize myself as, they don't have 'entomologist' or anything remotely related in the choices, nor do they have anything as simply defined as laboratory support services, they have everything but. The closest item was nestled amongst the aerospace categories: 'Other scientific consulting,' so I selected that one. And even though their definition of 'support services for forestry' has nothing to do with laboratory work, I choose that one as well. The bugs I'm working with are invasive bark beetles, they affect forests, the work is tangentially related, I'm just not milling lumber or making paper or whatever else they included.
So there you go, Deb Denovich, sole proprietor, other scientific consulting.
