If you are in Mt. Washington and hungry, do not go to the Grandview Saloon. I went there with my coworkers, a farewell dinner for the visiting Russian scientist. Mt. Washington was the targeted area for the interesting view. It seems strange to me. This man stayed in our country for three months, yet no one made any effort to take him anywhere to see local sites or expose him to favorite restaurants. It was known that he had a love of nature photography, yet no one offered to take him to any of our state parks or forests. He was a hard person to get to know because of the language barrier. But still, I'm almost embarrassed to admit no one extended a hand of hospitality, to make the three month visit more than just solely working on the systematic and taxonomic arrangement of the eastern Russian and Asian moth collection. So his last night in town, he did get a spectacular view of the city. However, I have never had such bad service anywhere. The place was not terribly busy. Our reservations were for 7:30, we arrived and were seated a little early. Our food wasn't served until shortly after 9:00! The food was tasty, but not an-hour-and-a-half-wait tasty. They did apologize and offered us free dessert. I don't think the waiter was expecting anyone to actually order dessert, and in fact no one was really planning on getting anything for fear of a similarly ridiculous long wait, but no one passed up on the offer! I later regretted it. I had the flourless chocolate cake; it was impossibly rich and had layers of chocolate mousse. I felt ill after eating it. Way too much sugar for after 10 pm! If the service is that bad when it's not crowded on a week night, I would hate to be there on a busy Friday night! Next time there is a visiting specialist I'll try to encourage everyone to offer something interesting to do or see in and around our area.
